Two Christian organisations that support Israel are suing the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, for using her title and platform to smear them.
The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) has filed a lawsuit in a Colorado court on behalf of Christians for Israel USA (C4I) and Christian Friends of Israeli Communities (CFIC).
It cites Ms. Albanese for defamation, trade libel, and tortious interference, following a series of public statements and reports in which she accused the charities of war crimes and other heinous acts.
The plaintiffs say the claims are wholly baseless.
“MALICIOUS CAMPAIGN BY SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR”
The complaint outlines a malicious campaign by the Special Rapporteur, who, despite explicit warnings from Christians for Israel and the US Department of Justice (DOJ), continued to publish inflammatory accusations.
In a letter dated April 24, 2025, Ms. Albanese alleged that the organisations were guilty of “gross human rights violations,” including apartheid, crimes of aggression, and willful killing.
In a statement, C4I says: “This escalation follows a pattern since Albanese’s appointment in 2022.”
UN OFFICIAL’S THREE YEAR ANTI-ISRAEL CAMPAIGN
“In her reports, she has repeatedly attacked Israel’s legitimacy, describing it as a “settler-colonialist entity” and accusing organisations like C4I of enabling the displacement of Palestinians through humanitarian aid in Judea and Samaria.”
“She claimed that C4I’s support for food aid, emergency housing, and care for the vulnerable constituted violations of international law and possibly war crimes — despite independent expert reports confirming that none of the donations were used to support violence or land theft.”
C4I sent a formal request for evidence to Ms. Albanese in May 2025, but received no response.
LAWSUIT FOLLOWS INTIMIDATION CAMPAIGN OF THREATENING LETTERS
The lawsuit stems from a series of “threatening letters” she sent to corporations and non-profits worldwide during the northern summer, warning organisations to cut business ties with Israel or face legal repercussions.
Her campaign drew a private rebuke from the Trump Administration in April, which formally petitioned the United Nations to fire Albanese, and played a role in the State Department’s subsequent decision to sanction her for waging an “illegitimate and shameful” anti-Israel crusade.
The lawsuit also alleges that she sought “to destroy plaintiffs’ reputations and economic well-being” through a smear campaign driven by ideological hostility toward Israel and its supporters.
It claims her rhetoric has led to death threats against staff, vandalism of offices in Europe, and political pressure to revoke the groups’ charitable status.
QUESTIONS OVER UN OFFICIAL’S DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY
The first-of-its-kind lawsuit also questions Ms. Albanese’s diplomatic immunity, which the plaintiffs believe she has abused.
They argue her intimidation campaign took place during a time when her role as Special Rapporteur had lapsed and her diplomatic immunity had expired.
They claim her position was up for renewal during the time she issued the legal threats.
CLAIMS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ROLE EXPIRED AT END OF APRIL
The lawsuit claims the UN only voted to reinstall her in the role in April 2025, after the letters had been sent and multiple nations had allegedly objected to her continued employment.
Albanese’s mandate “legally expired on April 30, 2025 and she held neither official UN status nor any arguable immunity as of May 1, 2025,” the plaintiffs argue.
“Though published under the guise of an official United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) report, her appointment as Special Rapporteur had legally expired prior to the report’s publication in June.”
“WE WILL NOT BE SILENT”
“If a racist anti-Semite gains a position of power and proceeds to abuse the public platform she enjoys in order to perpetuate lies about religious organisations for their compassion toward and allyship with the Jewish people and the Jewish State of Israel, she can and should be held liable for defamation,” said Rachel Sebbag, NJAC litigation counsel.
“Persecution of Israel, the Jewish people, and their supporters is not new,” added Willem Griffioen, Chairman of both Christians for Israel International and Christians for Israel USA.
“Albanese’s goal is to cut off our love and support for Israel, and she tramples our freedoms in the process. We will not be silent,” he declared.
“DEFAMATORY CAMPAIGN HAS PLACED WORK, STAFF AND DONORS AT GREAT RISK”
“Some of the vilest anti-Semites and terror supporters have sought to shield themselves from accountability by hiding behind the UN flag,” said Eugene Kontorovich, professor at George Mason University’s Scalia Law School and senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, who advised the legal team in the lawsuit.
“But as UNRWA recently discovered, automatic immunity is over.”
The Trump Administration has commendably sanctioned Albanese, but the American citizens she has harmed deserve direct justice.”
“Our mission is simple: to connect Christians with Jewish communities in Israel and foster relationships,” said Kimberly Troup, Director of CFIC’S US Office.
“Francesca Albanese’s defamatory campaign has placed our work, our staff, and our donors at great risk.”
“We will not allow lies and anti-Semitism to silence us.”
